Break It to You Gently: The Morning Alarm Playlist

By Audrey Avril ’19

No one likes waking up on a Monday morning. There’s very little that can help you through such a painful experience, but at least you can pick (sometimes, roommate considered) what wakes you up.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but sometimes my usual favorites don’t quite work in the morning. This playlist is a collection of songs for to ease you back into the real world and get you excited for the day. Or, at least, keep you from smashing your alarm clock.

“Here Comes the Sun” – The Beatles

An obvious, no, definitely cliché choice, but if you need a quick dose of sunshine, look to this Beatles classic. Let’s get it out of the way now.

“Deep Cover” – Man Man

Not as optimistic as the first, but a sweet song nonetheless. It isn’t going to trick you into thinking the world is all rainbows and unicorns out there, but it’s as soft as the bed you’re going to have to leave and as nice a sentiment as you might be able to get today.

“Don’t Worry Be Happy” – Bobby McFerrin

Another slow opener to what may be a stressful day. Whether it’s an essay, an exam, drama, an alien invasion, the apocalypse, or all of the above, just don’t worry about it, man. Be warned, though; side effects include humming all day. All. Day.

“Good Morning” – Kanye West

A quiet song from an artist who may be the king of waking up on the wrong side of the bed. It’s Mr. West saying good morning to Mr. West, and for a few sleepy seconds you might think you are Kanye himself. It is a magical feeling.

“Saint Jerome” – Coconut Records

A sad little quirky song for waking up on a sad little rainy day. A lot of Coconut Records’ work gives that kind of vibe, and the song “West Coast” works just as well. Waking up to this feels like waking up in an indie romcom; things may not be going great, but there’s a warm bittersweet-ness that gives the cold morning some heart.

“Subterranean Homesick Alien” – Radiohead

Maybe mornings will never be your thing, so it’s not worth it to try to play it up with a peppy pop song. At least some classic Radiohead can lull you out of bed and follow you around for a real, and real relaxing, morning.

“Take Me Somewhere Nice” – Mogwai

Definitely a song you need plenty of time in the morning to listen to, but well worth it for a perfectly-timed resurfacing from sleepiness. I recommend this for days when you don’t have to wake up soon, but you have to wake up well.

“It All Began with a Burst” – Kishi Bashi

Much of Kishi Bashi’s work has a clear, bright, and refreshing feel to it. This song, aptly titled, will awaken you in an eclectic burst. “Bright Whites” will also do the trick.

“Waves” – Electric Guest

My favorite alarm, no, morning song. I usually scorn this kind of unapologetic peppy-ness in later hours, but at daybreak, it works its charm perfectly. Quick and to the point, it’s the kind of spark that gets me ready to face the day.
